TitleAlexander Technique for Performing Artists
LocationNew York City, NY
Date and TimeMid-June through July, on Wednesdays
Three hour class meeting once a week. Contact Esper Stu
DescriptionAlexander Technique offers a dynamic process to observe and improve the quality of one’s use of the body -- without compromising connection to the moment. It helps performers streamline their approach. Students learn to recognize and release mental and physical habits which interfere with presence and performance, inviting freedom and an improved coordination of the whole self. The class introduces the Alexander principles, helping performers to realize that emotional connection and focus do not require physical over-tension. The class is a great opportunity for those who are new to Alexander and would like an introduction tailored for performers, as well as those who are familiar with Alexander Technique and would like to refresh or deepen their understanding and application of the Alexander process. Benefits: increased movement range, coordination and versatility. economy of effort, safe use of the body -- appropriate tension increased presence, awareness, and ease support for vocalization, breath and movement Alexander is offered in many leading performance institutions around the world. TitlePost Certification Course with Nanette Walsh: Soft as Butter, Strong as Steel
LocationNew York, NY
Date and TimeFriday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7, 2009
Friday: 3:30 - 8:30; Sat./Sun. 10:00 - 4:00.
DescriptionFM Alexander’s hands were thus described by Judy Liebowitz at the 1st International Alexander Congress in 1986. During the later years of his life, Alexander was particularly revered for the powerful efficiency with which he coordinated a student's breathing and postural support. How might we as teachers better realize this full range of sensitivity, strength and unified purpose? Peggy Williams often referred to one’s ability to teach as being dependent on a strong back, and a strong and breathing back being dependent on the "re-education of our sensory register." Peggy was deeply rooted in her sensory experience, and her practice and teaching of the technique were deeply rooted in conscious inhibition. In this workshop we will explore how conscious inhibition rooted in sensory experience is fundamental to the profound sensitivity, power and unified purpose that FM was able to convey with his hands in his teaching. This course satisfies 14 hours in Category 1 of AmSAT's Continuing Education requirement. Course is limited to 12 participants. Visit http://acatnyc.org/DemonstrationsEvents.html for details on all post certification courses and cancelation policies.
Cost $445 members/$520 non-members (includes a $25 non-refundable registration fee).
Teacher Info About Nanette Walsh: Nanette Walsh received her Master of Fine Arts in 1982 specializing in the linguistic analysis of movement. She began studying the Technique in1983 and received her teacher certification from the American Center for the Alexander Technique in 1995. After training she began a course of study and correspondence with Peggy Williams and Walter Carrington in London, continuing until their deaths in 2003 and 2005 respectively. In addition Nanette has done extensive post graduate training with Pearl Ausubel and John Nicholls, and has been a long time student of Tai Chi Chuan. Nanette is a senior faculty member at AT·NYC s Teacher Certification Program, part of the visiting faculty at ACAT s Teacher Certification Program, and on the faculty of the Annual Summer East Coast Residential Course in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
