DescriptionWhether you’re playing an instrument, driving a car, using a computer, exercising, writing, or cooking, unconscious habits of tension can interfere with your activity and cause fatigue or pain. The Alexander Technique is an educational method that helps you eliminate these harmful habits through increased awareness and control in everyday activities. In this introductory workshop we will discuss the basic principles of this method, and demonstrate how you can apply them in ordinary movements. If you’ve been curious about the Alexander Technique, this is an enjoyable way to find out what it’s about! Written materials included. Class size limited to ten participants. Preregistration is advised.
Cost $15 members, $23 non-members
Teacher Info Laura Klein has been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1987. She is certified by the American Society of the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) and the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). She is also a professional musician. Laura gives lectures and workshops throughout the Bay Area, trains teachers at the Art of Learning Center, and has a private practice in North Berkeley.

DescriptionThis class will teach how to apply the principles of the Alexander Technique to sitting comfortably. Each class includes: practical information for you to use immediately, reading material, experiential exercises and lots of hands-on guidance. Class size is limited to 4 people to ensure everyone gets sufficient practical work with the teacher. The cost includes a book and a private lesson to support the in class work, valued at $15 and $75 respectively. (Although best avoided, if your schedule requires you to miss one class you will be credited $40 toward a future lesson, workshop or class. There is no further credit if you miss more than one class.) Website provides a detailed syllabus for the class.

DescriptionIntroductory workshops can be a great way to get a crash course in the fundamentals of the Alexander Technique. Each beginning course is designed as a complete introduction to the Technique. Whether or not you choose to continue with private lessons or an ongoing class, you will take away from this course a basic understanding of one of the most profound and healing somatic practices in the world. Constance Clare offers a 6-week introductory workshop with 6 class sessions plus one private session. Class sessions are 90 minutes; private sessions are 50 minutes. Class size is limited to 6 students.

Teacher Info Constance Clare-Newman, M.AmSAT, had a first career in training dressage horses and riders and a second career in performing and teaching modern dance, so she is well acquainted with the needs of athletes and performers. She recovered from chronic pain and injury with the help of the Alexander Technique. Constance is an experienced teacher who avidly collaborates with her students in reaching their individual goals. Constance has a private practice in Oakland and San Francisco and also teaches in the actor training program at Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

DescriptionLearn about your body s structure and movement possibilities while building practical skills to enhance health, poise, and freedom from pain while in movement. The Alexander Technique (AT) is a proven, safe, self-care method to stop pain, stress and muscular tension caused by everyday misuse of the body. In this introductory course through gentle guiding touch, the spoken word, and studied movement, the instructor will assist participants in changing their personal quality of movement in keeping with their body s design. The Alexander Technique has a distinction from other movement techniques or therapies in that is it not an exercise program but it is an educational method which can be applied to any movement allowing the student to move with greater safety, less strain, and physical pain. Once the student has acquired the skills of the AT, they can then apply the skills to other movement techniques such as Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Dance, or a favorite sport. Classes will include centering work, experiential anatomy, challenging movement games and applying the technique to playing an instrument, playing a role, or singing a song. Bring a yoga mat, wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to have fun.

DescriptionA practical weekly group experience in the Alexander Technique. This summer we will have 8 group classes: June 10, 17, 24, July 8, 15, 22, August 5, 12. If you have studied with Rebecca before, drop-ins are possible, space-permitting. We practice doing less in order to find more strength, power, fluidity, and support. DescriptionAs teachers of the Technique, time spent on us exploring our relationship to the work is invaluable. Spend the day in the countryside 15 minutes from Downtown Charlottesville (on the Richmond side). We will work developing awareness and directing our attention. The day will begin and end with a quiet sitting; we will study walking and take a trail walk on Lonesome Mountain; application work in the kitchen will be approached as a way of bringing AT work to the rhythms and demands of our daily lives. Lunch included; special diets cheerfully accommodated with prior notice.

Teacher Info Sandra Bain Cushman qualified as a massage therapist in 1984 and quickly grew frustrated with people’s recurring conditions and injuries (including her own). In the fall of 1986, Sandra helped to found VSAT, from which she graduated in March of 1990. She maintains a private practice in Charlottesville, Virginia, and travels to work with musicians and groups of AT aspirants worldwide. Sandra also runs a start-up company, Sisyphus Rocks, which introduces Alexander principles to schools and businesses.

DescriptionThis is an experiential introductory workshop on the Alexander Technique. It is insightful and enjoyable as well. DescriptionJohn Nicholls is again offering, for the academic year 2007-2008, a teacher refresher course based on the weekend program he has run for the past four years: The Carrington Way of Working. In it he presents his synthesis of the fundamental elements of the Carrington approach to Alexander teaching in a way that can be assimilated and used by teachers trained outside of that tradition. The program will comprise six weekends over an eight month period, and nine private lessons. Each weekend will have a theme, forming a structured progression through the months. The group will explore each theme with a combination of theory and practice. The practical work will involve all participants putting hands on each other following a guided program designed to quickly build new teaching skills. The private lessons will be individual initially, then, as the course progresses, they will become supervised practice lessons with a classmate or with a volunteer student.
Cost $2600 includes 9 private lessons
